Shimla: The
Indian Air Force's elite Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, mesmerised thousands during a two-day air show over Sainik School, Sujanpur Tira, in Himachal Pradesh.
The show concluded on Thursday.
Set against the snow-clad Dhauladhar range, the skies came alive with aerial artistry, symbolising the strength and spirit of the armed forces. In a first-of-its-kind event for the hill state, the team executed precise formations and high-speed manoeuvres, painting the sky in vibrant hues and leaving spectators spellbound.
The occasion was also significant for the institution, which has produced over 600 defence officers, including two distinguished alumni — Air Commodore Brijesh Paul and Squadron Leader Himkush Chandel — both former members of the Surya Kiran team.
The event carried emotional resonance as the team paid tribute through a special formation to Sainik School alumnus Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who died in a crash during a demonstration sortie of the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas at the Dubai Air Show on November 21 last year.
Flying indigenously built Hawk Mk 132 jets, the nine-aircraft formation showcased loops, barrel rolls and other complex manoeuvres, reflecting the professionalism of the force.
Sujanpur MLA Captain Ranjit Singh Rana (retd), the chief guest, urged youth to stay away from drugs and take inspiration from the armed forces. School principal Group Captain Rachna Joshi said sustained efforts over the past year, in coordination with the defence ministry, had made the event possible, adding it would motivate students to pursue careers in the services. Hamirpur deputy commissioner Gandharva Rathore expressed hope that similar shows would be organised across the state in future.
